The development team switched to remote work shortly after DOOM Eternal's release due to the pandemic, hindering planned projects and expansions for the title.

Since its release, DOOM Eternal has won many awards and earned its reputation as one of the most beloved installments of the DOOM franchise. While the Invasion Mode would have allowed human players to take over the roles of demons within players' campaigns, Horde Mode will be an exclusively single-player experience. Thankfully, id Software was able to produce a Horde Mode to compensate for Invasion's absence. Sadly, Eternal's highly-anticipated multiplayer Invasion Mode was shelved due to difficulties born out of the physical disconnect of the team during the pandemic. Horde Mode has been a highly requested feature for DOOM Eternal for some time, a mode that would allow Slayers to defeat waves of demonic foes.
